Like other early customers, we just received our order for the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro from the editorial staff. Blue iPhones (and one green), the most popular color to read your reviews.
We won’t be repeating our impressions of the iPhone 12 Pro, you can read them in our preview released this morning. Let’s focus on the iPhone 12 as well as the new blue color, which is not the same at all on the two models.
IPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro share the same design and dimensions, but not the same finishes or colors. This very successful design is clearly inherited from the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4. No more rounded edges, place for flat edges which contribute to a grip that may be a little less comfortable (the corner of the terminal no longer hugs the palm of the hand), but firmer.
These corded edges make the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro smaller than the iPhone 11, which has the same diagonal screen (6.1 “). The iPhone 12 is also lighter than the iPhone 11, and it feels immediately in hand (162 g against 194 g).
Being much lighter than an iPhone 11 or even an iPhone XS (177g), the iPhone 12 almost makes me feel a bit hollow. But that’s not a negative point! I prefer a light iPhone, which will be less felt in the pocket and which will tire the hand less on a daily basis. The iPhone 12 Pro (187 g) is heavier than the 12, but not as much as the 11, although the difference is minimal.
If you thought the 5.8 “iPhone X / XS / 11 Pro was an insurmountable size for you, the iPhone 12 might make you rethink your judgment. Side by side with the iPhone 11 and iPhone XS, you might think it has a mid-size screen, when it does have a 6.1 ”screen.
From the front, very smart one who manages to distinguish an iPhone 12 from an iPhone 12 Pro. The difference between 11 and an 11 Pro was visible to a connoisseur: the edges of the 11’s screen were a little thicker and its LCD panel was less contrasting.
None of that in the 12 family, which has identical borders and OLED for everyone. The standard maximum brightness of the 12 Pro is higher than that of the 12 (800 nits vs. 625 nits), but that didn’t jump out at us during this short grip.
On the other hand, when we turn them over, or even when we touch them, we immediately differentiate them. Like the iPhone 11, the standard model has a glossy glass back, while the Pro’s is matte. For fingerprints, advantage to the second, who does not retain any, when the other is brushed very quickly. The polished glass of the iPhone 12 Pro is more serious, more “classy”, but I also find it more slippery (for some, it’s the other way around).
The colors are also very different. The blue of the iPhone 12 has nothing to do with the “peaceful blue” of the iPhone 12 Pro. The first is a navy blue unheard of at Apple. The blue of the iPhone XR or iPhone 5c was much lighter – and it was my preference, but tastes and colors are indisputable. Apple has chosen the blue of PSG rather than that of OM.
The peaceful blue of the iPhone 12 Pro is more discreet, almost extinct. Depending on the lighting, we even see more shades of gray or green.
As on the previous generation, the frame of the iPhone 12 is made of aluminum (it is therefore matt), while that of the 12 Pro is made of stainless steel (shiny). The latter is more sensitive to fingerprints and brings out more CE and trash markings – which are therefore no longer on the back. In both cases, the metal is tinted according to the chosen dominant.
Rest assured, it’s not all blue in the new iPhone family! The iPhone 12 is also available in black, white, red and green. This green is very pale compared to the blue color, as you can see in the photos below.
To conclude this overview, let’s note that the iPhone 12 like the iPhone 12 Pro makes a very good impression on us. The angular design will bring back (good) memories to owners of old iPhones. For others, it should be a pleasant discovery.
See you in the coming days to find out more about these two devices. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to ask us any questions that come to your mind, we will do our best to answer them.
