What we know
Pricing
Yesterday we took a closer look at the price of the upcoming Mavic Mini 2, which appeared to be leaking on Adorama. The Mavic Mini 2 was a recommended alternative considering the alpine white version of the original DJI Mavic Pro.
The Mavic Mini 2 starts at $ 449, a $ 50 premium over the $ 399 Mavic Mini. The Mavic Mini 2 Fly More Combo is expected to increase by $ 100 from $ 499 to $ 599.
Battery capacity
A new drone entered the FCC database earlier this month, the model being MT2PD. In the picture we can see that the drone looks like the original Mavic Mini that was released last year. If we look at the picture and the FCC label, we can see that the position has changed along with the capacity of the battery. The Mavic Mini 2 appears to have a 2250 mAh battery compared to the Mavic Mini’s 2400 mAh battery. Let’s hope this doesn’t affect the battery life.
Model name
As mentioned above, the drone that appears in the FCC database has the model name MT2PD. The original Mavic Mini bears the model name MT1SS5. If we look at the first three digits of the model, we can see that they are the same except for the number that increases from one to two, suggesting that this is the successor to the Mavic Mini.
Which we are not so sure about
4k Camera
Rumor has it that the Mavic Mini 2 is said to improve the camera with a bump of up to 4k over the 2.7k of the Mavic Mini. It was rumored that the Mavic Mini 2 came so quickly after DJI’s CEO said he wasn’t a fan of the image quality of the original Mavic Mini. Instead of just increasing the Mavic Mini to 4k, DJI could use a larger sensor that weighs a little more. This could be the reason why the battery has a smaller capacity to make room for a larger sensor.
To differentiate the Mavic Mini 2, DJI will likely take the same path as the DJI Pocket 2. DJI put a red ring around the camera lens to show that it is an updated version of the original Osmo Pocket. So expect a similar mark on the DJI Mavic Mini 2.
Release date
Since we saw the drone hit the FCC earlier this month and have now seen it on a seller’s website, it is expected to be released in early to mid-November. The original Mavic Mini was released on October 30th last year, which means DJI is preparing to get the Mavic Mini 2 ready for sale around the same time. I think DJI will release it sometime next month to get more units produced in time for launch. DJI probably doesn’t want to face the same stock issues it had when Ronin last launched.
New controller
With the Mavic Air 2, DJI has released a new controller that moves the phone holder up and gives your hands more plastic to grip. For DJI it would make sense to use the same controller for the Mavic Mini 2, but leave out some buttons to differentiate it from the Mavic Air 2. Since the controller is also larger than the original Mavic controller, this can lead to an error in the final price higher.
