While AMD is announcing the 5950X’s maximum boost speed of 4.9 GHz, it appears that AMD’s Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) technology can push the chip even further – to 5.04 GHz.
The results are https://twitter.com/TUM_APISAK/status/1318898619043389440and apparently taken from early results for the Geekbench benchmark results. When these benchmarks are correct and combined with other leaked benchmark results, it looks like the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X is becoming a real powerhouse of a processor.
PBO for victory
The leaked benchmarks show that the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X isn’t the only Ryzen 5000 chip benefiting from PBO. The Ryzen 9 5900X and the Ryzen 7 5800X reach 4.94 GHz and 4.84 GHz respectively and are thus well above the specified maximum boost clocks.
Remember, however, that these are just rumored benchmark tests. Due to the way CPUs and PBOs work, there is no guarantee that you will see this speed too often (if at all).
We’ll be running our extensive test suite on these processors shortly so we can check how powerful these new AMD CPUs are. We can hardly wait.
