It’s very likely that the Surface Go 3 will catch up, starting at $ 399 / £ 379 / AU $ 599, just with more powerful specs. However, if Microsoft moves to AMD chips, which tend to be cheaper than Intel’s, then this subsequent device may be cheaper.

What we want to see in a Surface Go 3
The Surface Go 2 is already a pretty impressive Windows 10 tablet, offering premium design and decent specs for less money. It’s certainly great value for consumers who don’t want to spend nearly a thousand dollars on a tablet.

However, as you’d expect with cheaper devices, it also has some shortcomings. The basic model is not challenged. Given that there are quite a few Android tablets out there that can give you what you need for much less, and you have the missing Type Cover and Surface Pen that you have to purchase separately, this isn’t it compelling buy for target audience than its rivals.

In order for the Surface Go 3 to really pay off, Microsoft has to make some adjustments. Fortunately, the company has a few years to work on the necessary improvements. In the meantime, let’s talk about what we’d like to see in Surface Go 3.

More performance in the basic model
Those who want to use the Surface Go 3 as a tablet only, either for entertainment after work or to keep up with current events and loved ones on social media, may be happy with the line’s entry-level configuration. Incidentally – for example with students – the basic model will feel under-challenged, especially next to its cheaper Android competitors.

The higher configurations are certainly more powerful. But then you pay more, which goes beyond the purpose of a cheap tablet.

If Microsoft wants to convince more budget buyers to upgrade to the next-gen Surface Go, it has to give its base model a little more juice.

Cheaper configurations
We hope Microsoft will choose to use AMD chips and replace the Intel chips in the earlier models of the Surface Go. The price goes down – if not for the base model, then for the higher configurations. That will bring it more in line with its Android competitors in price.

Of course, the lower-performance AMD chips mentioned above may not even show up in the Surface Go 3. However, if it does, it could prove to be an even better value for the audience.

Higher resolution cameras
Both generations of the Surface Go have the same 5-megapixel front cameras and 8-megapixel rear cameras, but let’s face it, those resolutions are barely enough these days. The Surface Duo has an 11-megapixel camera, while the Surface Pro X has a 10-megapixel rear-facing camera.

So we expect Microsoft to update the Surface Go 3 to higher resolution cameras, especially if it comes out in two years.

Type cover and / or pen pin included
One of the biggest problems with the Surface Go line is that they don’t come with a Type Cover or a pen. For those who want to use it as a tablet, this is certainly not a problem. And, to be fair, its biggest competitor, the iPad, isn’t either.

Nevertheless, Microsoft is promoting this “smallest, lightest 2-in-1 laptop” – and a laptop without a keyboard and trackpad. Microsoft can’t hope to continue promoting the Surface Go as such without this Type Cover, especially not for students who’d rather not spend an additional $ 100 on it.

Slimmer bezels
Microsoft has made the faceplate of the Surface Go 2 smaller so that the display becomes even bigger without enlarging the tablet. However, the Surface Pro X has proven that slimmer frames are also possible. Therefore, it would be nice if the Surface Go 3 follows the example and offers its users a larger screen area with the same space requirement of the device.
