The original DJI Mavic Mini is less than a year old, but there are already strong rumors of an upcoming DJI Mavic Mini 2 successor.

We’re huge fans of the Mavic Mini, which is currently at the top of our guide to the best beginner drones. It’s tiny, affordable, and weighs just 249g, which means it’s 1g less than the weight required to register a drone with civil aviation agencies like the FAA (in the US) or the UK CAA.

But that doesn’t mean there is no room for improvement, which is why DJI is apparently preparing to announce a successor. What new delicacies is the Mavic Mini 2 likely to bring and what have the leaks uncovered so far?

A recent US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filing has revealed some potential clues and usually suggests a launch is imminent. So let’s dive into everything we know so far about the DJI Mavic Mini 2 and what features we’d like to see on board its smallest, cheapest drone.

In a nutshell

  • What is it likely to do? A small 4K successor to the DJI Mavic Mini
  • When is it out? There’s no rumored start date yet, but it may be November
  • How much does it cost? Probably in the $ 399 / £ 369 / AU $ 599 region

DJI Mavic Mini 2 release date and price

So far there have been no leaks to reveal the possible release date or price of the DJI Mavic Mini 2, but we can make some educated guesses.

The original DJI Mavic Mini was launched on October 30, 2019. So if DJI is aiming for an annual release cycle (as what we’ve learned so far), we can expect a similar start date for its successor.

When it landed last year, the Mavic Mini was priced at $ 399 / £ 369 / AU $ 599, and its price isn’t too far off. Since the Mavic Mini 2 is likely to have a similar design to its predecessor, it is likely that its price will be in this stadium.

However, it will be interesting what happens to the price of the Mavic Mini when its sequel actually touches down soon. While a big discount seems unlikely, it could become a cheap option for those who don’t need to shoot in 4K.

DJI Mavic Mini 2 News and Rumors

The biggest clue so far that a DJI Mavic Mini 2 could hit the market soon is a US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filing that was recently picked up by the DJI drone pilot https://twitter.com/OsitaLV/status/1313526789784899585 on October 6th.

The filing shows a model number very similar to the original Mavic Mini. The bigger clue, however, is a wireframe drawing that shows the device’s battery along with a placeholder name “Camera Drone.”

If you compare this drawing to the existing Mavic Mini (below) there is definitely a strong resemblance. The position of the ports, including a microSD slot, is even identical.

What else do we know about the DJI Mavic Mini 2? The only other rumors currently suggest there will still be a 12MP sensor (likely the same 1 / 2.3-inch CMOS sensor as the current model), but this time it will be able to record 4K video.

The lack of 4K recording (or a 2.7K video mode) was one of our main criticisms of the original DJI Mavic Mini, so this seems like a likely upgrade for its sequel. We’d also love to see the inclusion of ActiveTrack object tracking, although it’s possible DJI will continue to reserve this for its mid-range drones like the DJI Mavic Air 2.

More likely to include a USB-C port to replace the Mavic Mini’s dated micro-USB charging. Otherwise, the DJI Mavic Mini 2 is expected to have the same physical design as its predecessor, which is understandable – it has to stay under 250g to maintain its hassle-free status as a drone that does not need to be registered with aviation authorities.

It is likely that the Mavic Mini 2 will continue to use Enhanced Wi-Fi for its connectivity, but it may have a longer range than the Mavic Mini at launch. A recent post on Chinese website Kanzhaji suggested that a firmware update increased the Mavic Mini’s range from 1.5km to 2.5km without losing the video feed. This is more of an anecdotal than an official improvement, but it does suggest the Mavic Mini 2 could get a similar range boost as well.

That’s about all we know about the rumored Mavic Mini 2 right now, but we’ll update this page with more rumors and official announcements as soon as we hear them.
