Pei is rumored to be moving to a new company. It’s not unreasonable to assume that he could at some point, but Pei’s own post does not suggest that this is a primary reason for his departure:
„I’ve never regretted trusting my gut instinct, and this time it’s no different. Over the past few years, OnePlus has been my unique focus and everything else has had to take a back seat. I look forward to taking some time off to relax and meet my family and friends. And then follow my heart for what’s next. “
Other, unfounded rumors suggest there was an argument with Lau, but Pei thanked him in his post:
I am eternally grateful to Pete for taking a risk in this college kid with nothing to his name but a dream. The trust, mentorship and camaraderie will never be forgotten. Thank you for the unique opportunity.
Pei was involved in the founding of OnePlus at the age of 24 and was one of the main people responsible for building the company’s brand. Most recently, he was a pioneer in the introduction of the north line.
Corporate gossip aside, I’m excited to see where Pei ends up, but I hope he takes this time to decompress. We could all use it after this year.
