Huawei Mate 40 Pro could offer a hexa camera setup for...

The Huawei Mate 40 series will be officially unveiled on October 22nd. The lineup apparently consists of three models – the Mate 40, the Mate 40 Pro, and the Mate 40 Pro Plus. Leaked renderings had implied that the new phones would have a gigantic camera module with four sensors. It now appears that at least one variant will have a hexa camera array.

That possibility was first addressed by Huawei executive Hua Hegang. Leaker @ RODENT950 was followed by a clearer image showing a Mate 40 phone, likely one of the Pro models, with an octagonal camera module for six sensors.

The camera’s specs remain largely a mystery, but at least one of these units could be a periscope shooter and the primary sensor could be 108 MP.

The bigger question here, of course, is whether we really need six sensors on a phone. The P40 Pro Plus with a penta camera array is pretty impressive, and it will be interesting to see if Huawei’s alleged hexa camera phone outperforms competing devices that deliver great images with just two or three cameras.

It also appears that the Mate 40 Pro and Pro Plus are getting professional-grade video recording capabilities.

The Mate 40 teaser also suggests Huawei is done with virtual buttons for the time being and is moving back to physical ones.

The Mate 40 Pro is said to have a 6.7-inch waterfall display with a wide hole for two selfie cameras. It will apparently have a refresh rate of 90 Hz.

All Mate 40 series phones are likely to be powered by the Kirin 9000, Huawei’s first 5nm chip. You will apparently be running open source Android 10 with EMUI 11 on top.
