Yahoo Groups will close for good on December 15, a year after the company’s parent company, Verizon, decided to take over most of the functions of the 20-year-old discussion forum platform.
Yahoo said the support of the platform “no longer fits” with their long-term strategy, citing the low usage. At the same time, Yahoo is stating that it’s no longer about hosting user-generated content.
“Yahoo Groups has seen a steady decline in usage over the past few years,” Yahoo said in a shutdown FAQ. “Over the same period, we’ve seen unprecedented engagement in our properties as clients look for top-notch, trustworthy content.”
A year ago, Verizon accelerated its decline by first preventing users from posting new content on Yahoo Groups and then deleting all content from the discussion forum platform. What’s left of Yahoo Groups is basically an email list service that members can use to keep in touch. But now this function is also running.
Today Yahoo is turning off the ability to create new groups. On December 15th, members will no longer be able to send or receive email through Yahoo Groups. “If you try to email your group after December 15, your message will not be delivered and you will receive an error notification,” Yahoo added.
The Yahoo Shutdown FAQ also recommends that affected users migrate to competing platforms such as Facebook Groups, Google Groups, and Groups.io, which offer a paid feature to import members from Yahoo Groups. However, only a Yahoo group administrator can download a full list of group members’ email addresses.
The upcoming shutdown closes a chapter in Internet history. Fortunately, last year a volunteer team of archivists worked to put many of the pages in Yahoo Groups before they were removed.
