HBO Max offers a few workarounds for Roku and Amazon Fire...

WarnerMedia has not yet broken an impasse with Roku and Amazon to get the new streaming services for the hardware made by the companies. Although NBCUniversal was able to come to terms with Roku earlier this summer and install Peacock on Roku devices around the world, WarnerMedia has yet to come to terms with equipment suppliers to install HBO Max on those devices.

Fortunately for those hoping to get HBO Max to the big screen, there are a few workarounds that you can use to sit back and relax and enjoy Game of Thrones on something other than your phone or tablet. Probably the easiest and most basic setup for getting HBO Max on your TV – if you don’t have any of the approved devices carrying it – is to use an HDMI connection between your TV and your laptop or mobile device. Just connect your laptop and TV with an HDMI cable and voila. You can power HBO Max from your laptop and mirror it to your TV.

Sure, it adds another cable to your setup and can be a hassle when you have to walk around a laptop sitting in front of your TV, but most people have plenty of extra HDMI cables lying around where they can do it right away. Just make sure you choose something that is worthwhile so that you don’t have to constantly get up off the couch to control the selection of movies or shows on your computer.

The second option is to “cast” HBO Max from your mobile device to your TV. If you are an Apple friend and you have both an iPhone (or iPad) and a device with AirPlay, you can transfer AirPlay HBO Max videos from your phone to that device. Certain LG, Samsung, and Vizio TVs that have AirPlay software built-in.

Casting is also a choice for Android and Windows users if you have a current Roku player. If your phone and Roku device are on the same wireless network, you can easily broadcast from your phone. This option requires some adjustments to the default settings that require users to go to Settings, System, and Screen Mirroring before they can allow casting from the phone to the TV.

It should be noted that the options above only apply to those who have Roku devices, Fire Sticks, or neither. HBO Max is already available for iOS, Android, Chromecast, Samsung TVs, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
