Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has signed a new contract with the Premier League club until 2023, extinguishing the threat that he could walk away next summer on a free transfer.

The Belgian, 30, could have entered negotiations with foreign clubs at the start of next month with just over six months remaining on his deal but has has instead committed his future to Spurs.

"I couldn't be happier," Alderweireld told Spurs TV. "I am honoured to play for this club and am a small piece of getting to the next level."

Alderwireld has been a mainstay in the Spurs backline since signing from Atletico Madrid in 2015, making over 180 appearances for the North London club.

The deal comes as a boost for manager Jose Mourinho, who was keen to sign Alderweireld when he was in charge of Manchester United last year.

Alderweireld has made seven appearances since Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino as manager last month.

Tottenham are next in action on Sunday when they face fChelsea at home, where victory could see them leapfrog their London rivals into the fourth and final Champions League qualifying place.
