Liverpool head into the Club World Cup final against Brazilian giants Flamengo on Saturday, the six-time European champions against the best supported club in Latin America.

The wo sides have met before; Flamengo won the 1981 Intercontinental Cup - the forerunner to the Club World Cup - by overpowering Kenny Dalglish and his teammates 3-0 in Tokyo.

Flamengo suporters still chant about that victory, roughly singing "In December 1981 we ran circles around the Englishmen/3-0 over Liverpool/It left a mark in history."

European teams don't have a great revcord in the Club World Cup. Howver, one Liverpool player has it apeard in the final before, and lifted the trophy.

Xherdan Shaqiri has told his teammates to savour the ‘amazing experience’ of competing in the event.

The Swiss was part of the Bayern Munich side that beat Raja Casablanca 2-0 in the final of the 2013 edition, and he is relishing the chance to make history by helping Liverpool lift the trophy for the first time.

“It’s special because you play against totally different nations’ clubs, so it’s an amazing experience,” Shaqiri told Liverpoolfc.com.

“You cannot always have this experience, it’s a long way to get there so we have to enjoy that too. I won it already with Bayern, it was amazing, and it’s also important for the club: a big trophy, an important trophy.

“It’s an opportunity to win it and to bring one more trophy back to Liverpool.”
