- Yasmine El Tohamy - Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane has admitted he wants to strengthen his attack, asking the fans to give him more time to succeed.

The Red Devils represented Africa in the continental competition. They started their ambitious journey with a 1-0 victory over Al-Duahil to reach the semi-finals against European giants Bayern Munich.

Two Robert Lewandowski goals sent them to a contest for the third place against Brazilian side Palmeiras, one that saw them win over penalties after a 0-0 draw, repeating the feat for the first time since 2006.

The bronze medal came under manager Pitso Mosimane, who has led them to their first Champions League glory since 2013, achieving the treble for Al Ahly in the challenging 2019-2020 season.

Pitso Mosimane: We need to bring in more players

However, Al Ahly was criticised for their poor attacking showing, scoring just once in the competition against Al-Duhail in the opening game.

“When I arrived in Qatar, I said that our goal is to win the title. Everyone said that I am crazy,” Mosimane told Al Ahly TV.

“But everything is possible in football. We could have reached the final if we had drawn against any other team and not Bayern Munich.

“It took Klopp five years at Liverpool to succeed, and Guardiola took four years, and if two great coaches like them need time, I definitely need it too.

“I have been here for only four or five months. I have the full support of the board, especially Mahmoud El-Khatib.

“We need to bring in more players. We did not score enough goals in the Club World Cup, so we need to strengthen the attacking area. Goals are the most important thing in football.

“We want to return to the Club World Cup, and this will only be achieved by winning the CAF Champions League.

“It was a difficult tournament, especially the final against Zamalek, as well as the Mamelodi Sundowns match, but we must defend our title.

“We will start this week without enough time to rest against Al-Merrikh.

“We celebrated the night before, and it is over. We will start a new chapter without forgetting the good things we achieved in the World Cup,” he added.

This marks the second time that Al Ahly has clinched the bronze medal after 2006 when the Reds beat Mexico’s Club América, thanks to Mohamed Aboutrika’s brace.

Al Ahly has now become the first African and just the second non-European/South American team to win two medals in the FIFA Club World Cup.
