CAF will be using the Video Assistance Refereeing technology (VAR) in the semi-finals of the Champions League this season.

VAR was introduced by CAF at last year’s Champions League final between Esperance and Wydad Casablanca where it caused a problematic ending to the tournament.

Esperance were crowned CAF Champions League winners after Wydad Casablanca abandoned the game following VAR controversy.

The second leg was halted for over an hour as Wydad refused to continue the game unless the VAR was checked, saying that no one informed them before the game that VAR will not be used.

However, this year, CAF have decided to do things differently and implement the VAR technology starting from the semi-finals.

Both Zamalek and Al Ahly have qualified for the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League after defeating Esperance and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively.

It’s noteworthy that this year’s CAF Champions League final will be decided by just one game, unlike last season’s two-legged format.
