(CNN) – Roman Grogan, a Formula One driver, had a terrible accident that set his car on fire at the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday, causing the race to be halted.

In the first session, Grogan veered off the track after the third corner after some friction with Daniel Kviat, the driver of the “Haas” team, and his car exploded on the collision and broke in two.

The French driver miraculously emerged from the flames after several seconds, and was immediately rescued by emergency services on the side of the track.

“He’s fine, he got slight burns to the hands and ankles,” Gunter Steiner, team manager of Haas, told Sky Sports.

“As a precaution and for further medical evaluation, Roman will be taken to hospital,” the Haas team added on Twitter.

Sky Sports estimated there was an 18-20 second separation between the point of impact and the Grogan emerging from the flame. The rickety and charred front half of the car, from which Grossgen managed to escape on his own, was to top the side barriers of the lane.

“In 12 years I’ve never seen such a lot of fire,” Alain van der Merwe, the medical vehicle driver, told Sky Sports. “Then Roman just started getting out of the car himself, which is amazing after an accident like that.”

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton wrote on Twitter: “I am so grateful that Roman is safe … The risk we take is no joke, for those who have forgotten that we put our lives on the line for the sport and what we love to do. The tremendous steps we have taken for Roman to get away from it safely. ”

Grogan made his Formula One debut in 2009 and joined the US team Haas in 2016, although he is scheduled to leave at the end of the current season.

The 34-year-old has climbed 10 podiums during his career.
