The body of Argentine soccer legend Diego Maradona has been transported to the presidential palace in Buenos Aires, where it will be shrouded so fans can take a farewell look.

The government has said it expects up to a million people to step up against the coffin of Maradona, who is considered a national hero and one of the greatest footballers of all time.

Officials quickly erected barriers and took other measures to curb the spread of the Coronavirus.

Crowds of crowds remained in the streets late at night to mourn Maradonas death and celebrate his life.

Stadiums across Argentina lit up the floodlights at 10 oclock – the hour chosen to match his shirt number – in honor of his memory.

The Vatican said Wednesday that Pope Francis remembers the football legend and Argentine Diego Maradona in nostalgia, and that he had prayed for him. The Holy See’s official media described him as a “poet of football”.

Maradona met the Pope several times in the Vatican after Francis was elected in 2013 as the first Latin American Pope.

Maradona traveled to Rome several times to participate in several games under the name “Games for Peace”, the proceeds of which were given to a papal charity for education in developing countries and victims of the 2016 earthquake in central Italy.

Diego Maradona died of a heart attack on Wednesday at the age of 60.
