ADO Den Haag has fired Aleksandar Rankovic, it reports Algemeen Dagblad in Broadcaster West late Saturday night. The 2-4 home defeat against FC Twente was reportedly the proverbial straw for the board of the Hague club.

After years of working alongside Henk Fraser, 42-year-old Rankovic stepped out of the shadows for the first time in The Hague. At Vitesse and Sparta, the former midfielder was an assistant coach and in The Hague he was ultimately responsible for a first team in the Eredivisie for the first time. Rankovic signed in good spirits for two seasons in the Car Jeans Stadium and got former teammate Richard Knopper, former Almere City FC coach Michele Santoni and Rick Hoogendorp as assistants and the support of a new technical heart led by Martin Jol.

The experienced Jol, who returned to ADO as a technical advisor in December last year, gained more influence in The Hague as head of the technical heart this season and that seems to have actually been the case. Hoogendorp and Santoni disappeared from the technical staff last week and Rankovic also hinted last week that there were tensions between him and the club management.

Manager Hakim Slimani late The Telegraph know that after the defeat Rankovic was told that his presence is no longer appreciated. There would no longer be any support from the supervisory board. According to Slimani, ADO wanted to draw up a message in which both parties supposedly had split up ‘in consultation’, but the trainer did not feel like it. It should become clear from Rankovic that the decision is entirely for the account of ADO, the newspaper writes.

Rankovic’s resignation means he has only sat on the bench for nine games as an ADO coach. He recorded two victories: one in the competition and one in the tournament for the TOTO KNVB Cup. The game against VVV-Venlo was won 1-2 and Sparta was beaten after penalties in the cup. After the defeat against FC Twente, ADO, which escaped relegation last season, is number sixteen in the Eredivisie with four points from eight games.
