AFL Business News, Rumors, Whispers 2020: Logan McDonald Draft, Fremantle Picks,...

Fremantle has “worked on” several scenarios where the draft contract will be pushed up, but believes it is unlikely that it will be able to pick local young star Logan McDonald.

And Docker’s football boss Peter Bell has not only emphasized that the club does not want to trade any of its young guns, but has also announced initial talks to extend Adam Cerra and Andy Brayshaw’s contracts.

Dockers’ first draft selection at this point is Pick 12, followed by Pick 32. However, earlier this week former recruiter Matt Rendell urged Freo to sell that selection to North Melbourne as well as aspiring midfielder Cerra to catch Pick 2 what it would have the best chance of recruiting Perth Demons striker McDonald.

Big final

Keep talking AFL Trade RadioRendell described McDonald, who this season with 21 majors from only nine games was fourth at the goalkicking table of the WAFL seniors, as a “generation player as a key striker” with 196 cm.

Bell said Friday the Dockers had been thinking about how to get into the first few picks of the draft. He stressed, however, that none of the Docker’s emerging talents would be exchanged for it.

“You would think Logan would get hit in the first couple of picks, possibly even pick 1. It’s extremely difficult to get the order up to this level, ”said Bell AFL Trade Radio.

“Of course we have put together a few ideas. We currently have pick 12.

“What we wouldn’t do is we won’t trade any of our young players. We see people like Cerra and Brayshaw, and Caleb Serong and Hayden Young, as cornerstones of our team for the next decade.

“We’ll continue to work on ideas for shopping, but at this point our ability to make choices that would be within the range of someone like Logan’s choices would be a long way off I think.”

Cerra turned 21 last month, while Brayshaw’s 21st birthday is on Sunday. Both ended up in the top four of the club’s best and fairest counts this year after promising campaigns.

Both players are under contract until the end of 2021, but Bell said there are plans to extend the respective deals.

“We’re really starting to bloom their games, especially this year,” Bell said of Cerra and Brayshaw.

“It is very much part of our plans to lock them up longer – and I understand that these discussions have started.”

Bell also said the Dockers had “regular discussions” with veteran David Mundy about a new contract.

Hogan was preparing for a giant move

Bell said the main reason behind a new Mundy deal being delayed was the lack of clarity about list size in 2021. According to Bell, Jesse Hogan’s recent exit made it easier for Dockers to decide on Mundy.

“I suppose at the beginning of the year, when we were 34, 35, we thought this would be his last year, and then he just did such a good job,” said Bell.

“Maybe the season itself also suited his style of play. He finished fifth in our best and fairest – same third, but was then mixed back to fifth place on a countback system – so he had an exceptional year.

“We have spoken to him regularly and I am sure that in the next few weeks, maybe even days, we will make an arrangement that he can play on.

Bell said feedback from Dockers fans and members for sending Hogan to the Giants in exchange for Pick 54 – two years after he gave up Picks 6 and 23 to get it from Melbourne – had been “mixed”.

“It is clear that our supporters don’t like to see the pick value erode if it didn’t work out. So that’s understandable, ”said Bell.

“Our backers also see that over the past four years we’ve been in a position where we’ve got a lot of top 10 picks – I think second only to Gold Coast in the past four years – so it’s not like we did it. ”I had an aversion to the hospital.

“And at the time I think most people could understand the pull on Jesse… we figured we might be able to bring a force forward that would play for us seven or eight years.

“So the reaction was mixed – and that’s understandable.”
