Mikel Arteta has responded to Roy Keane’s bizarre claim that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang “disregarded” the Arsenal boss by calling him by his first name after Sunday’s 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Aubameyang scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the second half and praised Arteta during his post-game interview with Sky Sports, using his first name to refer to him.

Keane was not impressed that the Arsenal captain addressed his manager by his first name, which suggested that Arteta showed disrespect.

“They didn’t show him any respect when they called him by name Mikel,” Keane said.

“He’s the manager, the boss, the gaffer. That is respect. Not Mikel, he’s not his buddy. ”

When asked by Sky Sports host David Jones if it was just the modern way to relate to your boss, Keane replied, “No, that’s called respect.”

Responding to the claim ahead of Arsenal’s Europa League game against Molde on Thursday, Arteta insisted that he understood Keane’s point of view but did not feel “disrespectful” after sharing the dressing room with several members of the current squad.

“I was told that Roy mentioned that. I dont know. I think it’s very special. I’ll give them the choice to call me however they feel comfortable, ”Arteta said.

“Some of them shared the changing room with me. I don’t feel disrespectful to myself. I understand why it is [Keane] says that as a player.

“The way I feel with them, I feel so close to them, we even played some of them together. That is not a problem for me. It’s not the way I would feel respected or disrespected. ”

The former Manchester City assistant coach admitted he was concerned about stepping into a locker room as a manager where he already knew many players from his time at the club.

“It’s something that I thought about a little before I joined, and not at the moment.

“Because it’s not something that just has to come with me. It is something that both parties need to understand in order to have respect and conduct the relationship the same way.

“To be fair, they made it really, very easy for me in that sense.

“Obviously, the feelings I have for her won’t change whether I’m on one side or the other because we’re part of the same thing, but it wasn’t difficult to deal with.”
