Last week, Lazio had to descend decimated to Club Brugge, on the second day of play in the Champions League. Goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha, defender Luiz Felipe, midfielder Luis Alberto and attacker Ciro Immobile, a European top scorer last season, were not there in the Jan Breydel Stadium. A fiercely weakened Lazio forced a 1-1 draw after all.

The club did not give an official reason for the absences, but it was clear enough to the Italian press that the corona virus had struck the Romans. A statement that was also confirmed last weekend when Lazio communicated openly for the first time and stated that there were a series of positive tests for the lung virus, which meant that the entire selection had to be temporarily quarantined.

The surprise was therefore great when it turned out that Immobile was there again in the league match against Torino on Sunday. After all, the tests taken a few hours before kick-off were all negative, it sounded at the club. On Tuesday, the mystery suddenly became even greater: news agency ANSA reported that Immobile did not travel to Saint Petersburg, where Lazio will take on Zenit on Wednesday on the third CL match day. A positive test at UEFA may be the cause of his absence.

The Italian federation no longer trusts the matter. “We are therefore opening an investigation into suspected violations of the health protocols to prevent the spread of the coronavirus,” it said in a statement. The FIGC also requested the test results from UEFA.
