The colossal defender has had a successful ACL surgery, but what are his chances of getting back into action before the end of the season?

Liverpool’s hopes of defending their first Premier League title took a turn after star defender Virgil van Dijk sustained a knee injury during the Merseyside derby.

Van Dijk clashed with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and hobbled off after just eleven minutes. Liverpool later confirmed that he had damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

So will he be forced to miss the rest of the season? Tor takes a look.

Will Van Dijk be out for the rest of the season?

Liverpool haven’t set a schedule for Van Dijk’s full return to fitness, but it’s safe to say that he is likely to miss out on most of the 2020-21 season.

The Dutch center-back was successfully operated on in October following his clash with Pickford. Liverpool confirmed the outcome of the proceedings.

“The Liverpool defender’s planned operation took place in London and was successfully carried out,” said Liverpool on their official website.

“Van Dijk will now concentrate immediately on starting his rehabilitation with the support of the Rote’s medical department. No time frame has been set for the Dutchman’s return. ”

ACL injuries can take anywhere from six to twelve months to recover. Therefore, Van Dijk’s most hopeful return flight date will be around April or May.

However, a spring return means he won’t be available for most of the current season, including the entire Champions League group stage.

Van Dijk expressed his optimism before the recovery phase and praised on his Twitter that he would be more active than before: “This afternoon I met with a leading advisor to plan the intricacies of my rehabilitation after yesterday’s incident begin. ” he said.

“I am now fully focused on my recovery and will do everything I can to be back as soon as possible.

“Despite the apparent disappointment, I firmly believe that trouble lies in trouble, and with God’s help I will make sure I return better, fitter, and stronger than ever.”

Van Dijk’s absence will undoubtedly be a major blow to Liverpool as the Dutch international has not missed a minute in the Premier League since September 2018. His injury against Everton ended a streak of 74 games.

He was instrumental in the Reds’ successful 2019-20 Premier League season. Ex-Liverpool vice-captain Jamie Carragher suggested his absence will leave the title open.

“So I think it blows the title race way up, I really do,” said Carragher.

“I still felt at the beginning of this season that Liverpool are definitely the team to beat and I think Van Dijk will be out all season. Now I think everything will be fine. ”

Will Van Dijk be fit for the euro in 2021?

The euros, which were originally supposed to take place in 2020 but have been pushed back by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, are scheduled to take place from June 11th to July 11th.

Realistically, Van Dijk has a very good chance of getting fully fit in time to represent the Netherlands in the continental UEFA tournament.

Should he be able to recover by spring, he might have several weeks to resume training before joining the national team ahead of preparation for the euro.
