There were three VAR ratings in the Tottenham Brighton game on Sunday, with two Spurs lanes and one Brighton lane and neither going the fan’s lane.
Before VAR was launched, it seemed like a great idea to use this incredible camera technology to get all calls right. However, after a couple of years, every game seems to be marked by VAR controversy. Sunday in North London was no different as there were three official VAR ratings, including a pitch-side rating. and Brighton went and wished a fourth review could have taken place.
This wasn’t the first time this season Tottenham Hotspur or Brighton had run-in with VAR. A late, apparently fantastic handball on the edge of the penalty area gave Newcastle a draw earlier this season. VAR appeared to be helping Spurs, however, when Erik Lamela dragged Anthony Martial into a dumb penalty that counted as a shot in the face and red card.
This is especially football, where sometimes even celebrations are muted and wonder if VAR will come into play. I suppose we were lucky enough that none of the calls on Sunday included red and blue lines and a slide rule that bit Spurs more than one for the past two seasons.
So what happened to the three VAR ratings on Sunday’s Tottenham win? Why might Brighton feel that a fourth review did not take place? How should we feel as VAR evolves? Read on to see.
