Ponzinibbio, one of many other notable MMA fighters training at the famous South Florida stable, revealed that Covington had created an awkward environment in the gym.
Additionally, Ponzinibbio noted that Colby Covington’s behavior led to several other ATT members like Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Dustin Poirier and Jorge Masvidal grappling with the former UFC welterweight champion.
Santiago Ponzinibbio declared –
“He had to get out of the gym to play all the roles he was beginning to play and create a bad mood, so he had to go.”
“I think it was a stupid attitude on his part and, yeah, better that he left because he brought a bad mood to the gym. So it’s good that he left. It’s for the better. “(* H / T MMA Junkie for the transcription)
Ponzinibbio also stated that there was no friendship between him and Covington, even though they trained together at ATT. It was all just business.
“He was never really my friend.”
Santiago Ponzinibbio said that he thought Covington was a great athlete and one of the best welterweight fighters, adding that he was very interested in a fight against the downright American.
The Argentine believes Covington will be a great matchup for him and that he could knock out Covington if they face each other at the Octagon.
Santiago Ponzinibbio wants to return to the octagon after a long break
Santiago Ponzinibbio’s last MMA fight was in November 2018, when he claimed an impressive knockout win over Neil Magny.
Since then, Ponzinibbio has faced several challenges preventing the talented welterweight from returning to active competition.
Ponzinibbio was scheduled to face Robbie Lawler in December 2019, but suffered a staph infection in October of that year and was forced to retire from the fight.
The staph infection and other health complications proved extremely challenging for Ponzinibbio, and the fighter revealed that he was actually fighting for his life in the hospital as doctors believed the infection had got to the bone and damaged everything.
Fortunately, Santiago Ponzinibbio survived the ordeal but then eventually ran into a few more injury and infection problems. Earlier this year he had also signed COVID-19.
The series of unforeseen incidents adversely affected Ponzinibbio and again prevented him from becoming active again.
Regardless, the welterweight recently announced his desire to return to the Octagon and win the UFC welterweight championship.
With that in mind, beating former UFC welterweight champion Colby Covington would surely increase Santiago Ponzinibbio’s chances of getting a shot at the UFC welterweight belt currently held by Kamaru Usman.
