AlphaTauri has confirmed that a welding defect caused the water pressure drop that forced Pierre Gasly to retire from the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Gasly had had another excellent weekend in Italy – scoring a shock victory at Monza in September – finishing fourth and finishing in P5 when the team asked him to retire on lap nine.

The only sign of a problem had previously been on the grid, where the AlphaTauri crew was working on the car after discovering a water leak.

While chasing Daniel Ricciardo’s Renault, the Frenchman received a radio message informing him of a “terminal situation” and that “there is no option – if we do not retire now we will blow everything up”.

AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost said the mechanics believed the problem was resolved before the Imola race started.

“They thought it was resolved,” said Tost, quoted by Motorsport.com. “But there is a small broken part in there and unfortunately it is gone.

“We noticed after four or five laps of the race that the water pressure had dropped and then we decided to bring it in because we didn’t want to risk the engine. There was a welded pipe on the radiator that cracked. ”

Back in the second team of the Austrian energy drink giant, the 24-year-old has proven his undisputed quality as a racing driver with a number of points and of course this unforgettable triumph at the Italian Grand Prix.

“It’s been a fantastic weekend for him,” added Tost. “He did a really good qualifying and ended up in fourth place. He got a fantastic start in the race and was on the side of [Lewis] Hamilton pushing him to the right and he had to lift.

“Nevertheless he came back in fifth place on the first lap. And I have to say, a fantastic job on his part.

“We had the debriefing of the race and of course, like all of us, he was very disappointed because he could have scored a good number of points.”
