Damwon has appeared on the world stage as an almost unbeatable titan. But Damwon only recently began his reign of terror.

History of Damwon

In 2017, Damwon signed the MiraGe Gaming roster, marking the start of Damwon Gaming’s competitive League of Legends team.

This list consisted of Lee “Parang” Sang-won, Kim “Crush” Jun-seo, Cho “BeryL” Geon-hee, Kim “TRY” Yeoung-hoon, and Ryu “Hoit” Ho-seong. BeryL is the only member still part of Damwon, but switched from his original AD Carry role to the support role when additional members joined.

The team originally played mediocre. In their first season they finished 9th to 12th in every tournament. It wasn’t until they made some roster changes that they saw success.

Heo “Showmaker” Su and Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon joined later in 2017, now two of Damwon’s most respected members. Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu joined in 2018 and Jang “Ghost” Yong-jun joined in February 2020.

In 2019 Damwon played well but her performance is unmatched by her recent form. With third place in the LCK Summer 2019 Playoffs, they manage to qualify for the worlds. They were eliminated in the quarter-finals by G2 and left an air of bitter defeat.

In the LCK 2020 Spring, DWG lost to DRX during the highlights. They finished fourth and were beaten by T1, Gen.G and DRX. It was then that they gained momentum.

In the LCK 2020 summer Damwon achieved first place by a large margin. Initially swapped with DRX, they eventually destroyed DRX in the final.

In Worlds, they caused terror in Group B. When Damwon faced DRX in the knockout phase, he defeated DRX and cemented his position as the strongest LCK team that season.

The current roster

The main line-up of the team currently consists of BeryL, Ghost, Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu, Showmaker and Nuguri.

These five have resulted in an incredibly consistent team that grows and overcomes obstacles. During the LCK summer they won the title of the strongest team. Much like steroids, Damwon has gotten stronger quickly over the past season.

The jungle of Canyon has proven to be impressive. His style of play is very aggressive, with picks like Nidalee, Lee Sin and Hecarim. His wise and dedicated engagements help lead many of Damwon’s team games.

At the top of the map, Nuguri has made a name for itself around the world. His flanks and knowledge of his own borders have earned his team great respect and trust, pitting holes in the enemy’s defense.

BeryL is the oldest permanent member of Damwon. His games are the glue that holds the members of Damwon together and stands up for his stretcher when necessary and dies. BeryL’s games are often overlooked by porters but don’t ignore him as his Tanky support picks form the backbone of Damwon Gaming’s team composition.

As Damwon’s AD Carry, Ghost plays fairly passively in the early stages of the game. This is often pushed in early so games can take place elsewhere on the map and BeryL can run around and help. Ghost plays with the aim of getting into the mid to late game to deal extra damage if necessary.

Last but not least, Showmaker plays Mitte. His twisted fate scares the opposing team as his ultimatums over twisted fate are unrivaled. He doesn’t earn his reputation by doing amazing damage in every game, but by being card-conscious. The showmaker knows where to be, when to be.

With Showmaker’s macro finesse and Canyon’s aggressive style of play, enemy teams often stay on the defensive. Nuguri thrives when it comes to breaking such defenses, and BeryL helps secure almost any game. With ghost scales, the team has almost no weakness.

Head coach

Much of her success is due to the incredible leadership of her head coach Lee “Zefa” Jae-min. Zefa, now head coach of DWG, was previously a coach for Afreeca Freecs and SK T1. Both teams under his command had great successes at key moments.

Zefa’s leadership and leadership under pressure are unparalleled. His ability to push players and focus their thoughts is often overlooked in terms of team performance, with the spotlight typically being on the players.

Thanks to Zefa’s guidance, DWG climbed the competition ladder. The DWG players have overcome the strongest LCK teams and worked to function better as a unit. The players were informed of their weaknesses and progress towards improvement.

The final hurdle: Suning

Damwon’s only obstacle is Suning after reaching the final level of the worlds. Suning beat Top Esports, destroyed the statistical predictions and looked at the Worlds Championship Trophy. The game will air this Saturday so be sure to tune in.
