The Reds captain spoke about the impact his teammate had on Anfield before taking on FC Midtjylland in the Champions League

Mohamed Salah is now better than he was in his first season at Liverpool, according to Jordan Henderson, who called the Egyptian’s scoring record “computer game material”.

Salah instantly became popular with Liverpool fans after making a € 42million move from Roma in the summer of 2017 and scoring 44 goals in 52 games in his first season at Anfield.

He became the highest-scoring striker in a single Premier League season and helped the Reds reach their first Champions League final in 13 years.

Since then, Salah has increased their record for Jürgen Klopp’s side to 100 goals in 161 games and brought their century to a close in a thrilling 2-2 draw in a Merseyside derby tie against Everton earlier this month.

The 28-year-old’s last third performance has gradually declined over the past two seasons, but he remains one of the deadliest strikers in European football, having already scored six goals in 2020/21.

Henderson is impressed with how consistent Salah was on goal and believes he is a more complete player now than he was in his extraordinary first year on Merseyside.

“Mo’s numbers are staggering,” wrote the Liverpool captain in the club’s official matchday program ahead of a home game at Midtjylland in the Champions League on Tuesday. “He reached his century with just 159 appearances – these are computer toys!

“I read that Mo reached this milestone in the third fastest time in LFC history. The other two Liverpool players who were a century faster are Roger Hunt and Jack Parkinson – and we’re going back quite a long time. It just underscores the enormity of his contribution.

“I shouldn’t be surprised, but it underscores once again how happy we are all to work with him or to be a supporter of this club when he’s here with us.

“I don’t think Mo will be taken for granted for a minute. At least the 100 percent is not from anyone associated with our club. But I think the level of his performance might deserve a little more credit in the game.

“It is possible that the numbers he scored in his first season with us – over 40 goals – mean anything else that has been measured by an unfair and unrealistic standard since then.

“As someone who has the privilege of playing by his side, I can tell you he’s so much better now than he was this first season. I also think his contribution is more important now than it was this first season. As amazing as it was, it just got better. ”

Henderson added the work Salah is doing on the pitch, which is often overlooked: “When you look at how we’ve grown as a team since 2017/18, Mo’s contribution to that has been as great as any. He works so hard for the team, sacrifices for the team. We all benefit from this on the pitch.

“It feels rightly or wrongly that Mo is only really praised when he scores goals and that I miss so much of the overall contribution that he makes.

“We are so happy to have this quality with all of our front players. Sadio, Bobby, Taki, Diogo, Divock, Shaq and so on … To play on our striker line, you have to have a lot more than just goals and assists. Mo embodies the best of it and still gets the numbers he makes.

“Personally, I hope the goal at Goodison Park was to get Mo to hit his first hundred for Liverpool and so many more to come. I am sure it will. But in the meantime, I can’t tell you how much we all appreciate him. ”
