Gun defender Jayden Short delivered a raw, heartfelt acceptance speech and opened a tough year off the field after his boilover win at Richmond’s best and fairest count.
Shortly on Monday night, superstar teammate Dustin Martin upset his first award for best and fairest tiger – and Martin hugged him the most when the backman went to the podium to accept his award.
The 24-year-old, who won his second premier medallion on Saturday night, voted against Martin (50) with 53 votes.

Speaking to Tiger’s players and slimmed-down club championship staff on Monday, Short said it was a “great honor” to receive the award, but then opened up during a difficult season off the field.
Short wore a black armband every game that season as a tribute to his father, who had passed away earlier this year.
“Obviously 2020 started pretty badly for me. I lost my old man, ”said an emotional short. “I didn’t know what was going to happen this year.
“To win this, it’s an amazing feeling and a little appreciation for a little bit of hard work I had to put in along the way.
“I love this club, I love this group, the coaches.”

Short paid tribute to his family, who lived mostly outside of Queensland throughout the year.
“I just want to thank my mother, sister, and girlfriend. They make it difficult in Melbourne, ”said Short, holding back tears. “I left my mother and sister at home and lost myself as an old man. That in itself is quite a challenge.
“But I am proud of you and I love you down to the last detail.

“Many thanks to my friend for the support, all of my friends back home, all of the players, coaches and staff who made this place so enjoyable.
“I honestly loved my time here. Of course it had its challenges this year, but it’s an amazing place and I love everyone.
“I’m sorry if I missed someone, but thank you.”

Tiger’s trainer Damien Hardwick said Short was “a wonderful boy and he’s a wonderful man from Richmond.”
“To hear him talk about his family today and the fact that he lost his father earlier this year was incredibly moving,” Hardwick told Fox Footy’s On the couch.
“It’s an incredible honor for his father, that’s what he strived for. He really gets the reward he deserves. ”
Short was ranked in the league’s top 10 this season for average kicks, meters gained and running jumps.
“It was a revelation. He’s played in our last two Premierships – he missed 2017, played 18 games this season – but he’s had a wonderful year, ”said Hardwick.
“He’s a very, very important player to us, how he moves the ball. He’s an excellent team-mate, he’s very popular in our playgroup.
“He’s probably a little underrated, but he’s had an incredible season and it’s well deserved.”
Short was one of seven players in the top 10 under the age of 26, with Bolton, 21 and Noah Balta, 21 being rewarded for their breakout season.
