History so far

The two best-placed players in the Zozo Championship go first and second to the finals of the Sherwood Country Club – an exciting shootout should take place between Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas.

Rahm carded a majestic bogey-free third round 63 to advance to second place, a shot behind Thomas, who was battling a 67 despite not being in top form. Sherwood played easier than the World Challenge, with a scoring average of 69,048 in the first three rounds.

Rahm (10: 1) and Thomas (12: 1) have shortened to 9: 4 and 13: 8, respectively, with the market taking the first two places with 12: 1. Patrick Cantlay, who didn’t drop a shot through 54 holes, is three behind in fourth place.

Xander Schauffele, who is fighting for preference with Rahm ante-post, is eleven shots behind in 39th place.

Preview of the finals

Bookies give Justin Thomas the edge over Jon Rahm for their potential Sunday duel – the top two players on the field could make this a head-to-head game if both start quickly – but the odds for Rahm seem much more generous than those against the Name of the leader.

Thomas faltered over the last holes of the second round and then was not impressive for large periods of the third round. The American was unpredictable from tee to green and scored such a good number under the circumstances.

The birdies on the 16th and 17th brought Thomas’ nose forward again – it was a brave ending – but Rahm is the player who can be most certain about the state of his game on Sunday.

Rahm hit every fairway on round three and his putter came to life. During the CJ Cup, then the first round and a half of the Zozo, a cold flat stick handicapped the Spaniard, but he got it going late Friday and only needed 25 putts on Saturday.

Rahm was five below average in his last eight holes of the second round – which means he’s under 14 in his last 26 holes – and the top-ranked player on the field has advanced to the last group with sheer brilliance. After putting in top gear, it would be a shock if he didn’t quickly advance from 18 under par and set a competitive 72 hole total.

Rahm was the pre-tournament headline for Racing Post Sport 10-1, hoping he’s the man to beat. A Zozo success would be the perfect pre-Masters fillip for one of Augusta’s main competitors, and it can be expected to bring Sherwood a determined determination to break up.

A cool day with a light breeze is forecast. Lanto Griffin could feel overwhelmed in the final three-way battle in such high-class society, and Rahm-Thomas’ double prognosis is worth considering for Rahm supporters seeking additional interest. Rahm first, Thomas second, Patrick Cantlay third, Bubba Watson fourth is a possible 1-2-3-4.

Betfair and Power have a market without Thomas and Rahm – and Cantlay with 3: 1 and Watson with 12: 1 are fair prices. The last threeball takes place on the tee at 6:50 p.m. UK and Irish time.
