Of France Ugo Humbert was the first ATP title winner in 2020 when he won the Auckland title in January. Much has changed in the world since then thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, but Humbert’s steady improvement continues.

The stubborn south paw saved four match points in the second set and pushed past Dan Evans at the European Open to book his second career final on Saturday, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4.

He will play against Australians Alex de Minaur in the final on Sunday after 21-year-old Grigor Dimitrov, 7-6 (4) 6-7 (3) 6-4 in the second semi-final on Saturday.

Humbert, who became the youngest ATP title list from France since Richard Gasquet in 2007 when he won the aforementioned title in Auckland, celebrated his 20th win on Saturday. That number surpasses his overall 2019-17 win.

“I had four match points less, but I was mentally strong and took my chances,” said Humbert after the win. “I stayed aggressive and when I won the second set, I knew I was back on the road.”

Humbert saved all three breakpoints he faced in the playoff in order to win the three-hour and twelve-minute competition. In total, he saved 11 of 14 breakpoints to achieve his tenth top 50 win of the season.

De Minaur improves to 7-2 in the semi-finals by taking his first win in two attempts against Dimitrov and reaching his first ATP final of the season. He swapped breaks with Dimitrov to get four in the decisive set but then took the last two games to end his win.
