Perez, reprimanded for blocking Gasly in the standings

The Racing Point driver had abandoned a fast lap at the end of Q3 and the team told him towards the end of the lap that Gasly was approaching. He tried to get out of the way of the Frenchman, but it was too late.

The stewards ruled that it was a case of obstruction, but in effect gave Pérez the benefit of the doubt given the mountainous nature of the track. Portimao, and the fact that it is more difficult for drivers to see approaching cars in their mirrors.

In those circumstances, they considered a reprimand to be a more appropriate punishment than the option of giving him three places on the starting grid which is often the verdict in these cases.

Three reprimands result in a 10-place penalty, but this was the first of the season for the Mexican driver.

Explaining their thinking, the stewards said they had spoken to both pilots and reviewed “multiple angles of video testing and radio conversations.”

“Pérez had just aborted his lap at Turn 10, although he was still traveling at a relatively high speed. The topography between Turn 10 and 13 is very mountainous, and the drivers have very limited vision of the cars behind them. Also, the time between the curves is very limited. “

“At the apex of Turn 13 Perez’s team received a radio warning that Gasly was approaching full speed. He immediately turned left at the exit of the curve. However, at this point the fact that he was at the apex when Gasly got closer he definitely obstructed Gasly.

“The stewards considered the difficulty of seeing what was evident on this circuit, and compared this incident with others of the season.”

“Therefore, the stewards considered this to fall under the qualification of ‘unnecessary obstruction’ (as stated in the regulations) and issued a reprimand.”

Pérez finished qualifying in fifth place, while Gasly will start from ninth on the grid.
