Although the Los Angeles Lakers only won a championship a little over two weeks ago, Rob Pelinka and the Front Office need to quickly focus on off-season tasks as reports increasingly point to a December 22nd start date for the next season. The Lakers will make the 28th pick in the NBA draft on November 18, with the 2020 NBA Free Agency starting sometime in the weeks following the draft.
Pelinka will obviously be trying to achieve an important goal, which is to re-sign Anthony Davis as soon as he terminates his contract. All indications are that Davis will sign with the Lakers for at least another year, with a high likelihood that a long-term contract will be made in a year or two (Davis would make more money in various scenarios if he waited for one Four to sign – on a five-year contract in an upcoming off-season). Rob Pelinka recently appeared on Adrian Wojnarowski’s podcast discussing how he’ll try to keep players for another championship run next year. He also discussed the Lakers’ potential to add a young superstar in the future to mate with Davis if LeBron James leaves (or if he just stays).
“We want to do a few things. We hope we can safely have another championship run next year and we will work hard to keep the parts around LeBron and AD and build parts around LeBron and AD to do that. But in the future too, if you study our ceiling (space), we have the flexibility to say, “Can we add another really, really talented young player to end it with AD, if he chooses to do it as a free agent to stay for five, six, seven, eight years? ”
LeBron James, who is not there as the Laker, would be the most realistic scenario in the Lakers (although the Lakers almost brought Kawhi Leonard together with our two superstars before settling on the Clippers). He is under contract for the 2020-21 season but has a player option for the 2021-22 season. If he doesn’t sign out, he would be an unrestricted free agent in the 2022 off-season. The list of potential free agents for 2021 is ABSURD, including players like Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Chris Paul and – of course – LeBron James. These players are not necessarily young, but Giannis Antetokounmpo and Victor Oladipo are. Either of these would be great additions to the Lakers as the combination of Giannis and Davis will almost certainly enable the Lakers to win multiple championships over several years.
We just have to see what Pelinka can put together in the future.
