Gary Neville explains why Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek...

Gary Neville believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek are currently not starting because Fred and Scott McTominay are creating more balance in a trio with Bruno Fernandes.

Despite a promising midweek cameo against PSG, Pogba was named back on the bench alongside Van de Beek for the Chelsea game this summer. Pogba has not started for United since October 4th and Van de Beek has yet to play in a league game for his new club.

At Sky Sports, Neville said he wasn’t surprised by the decision to leave both attacking midfielders on the bench against Chelsea.

Instead, he argued that the combination of Fred and McTominay provides a foundation for United to bring out the best in Fernandes’ creativity.

“I think the last five he’s picked are the ones he trusts the most,” he said. “With Maguire Fit he felt comfortable coming back to the last four. It’s what one would expect from Ole. I know the team did very well in Paris, but those are certainly the five he has always chosen. ”

“Midfield three, I like to think it’s his favorite midfield three. Fred and McTominay seem to be getting the most out of Fernandes. The attempt to find this balance with Fernandes, Pogba and van de Beek has not yet been fully done. In private, Ole could have the feeling that at the moment the three are the three who could give them the best result on the pitch.

“Up front it is obvious that Greenwood didn’t play this week, Martial is suspended so he decided Cavani wasn’t ready and he left with the three who played against Newcastle.

“I don’t think it’s as big a shock as social media or we might consider here.”
