The first night’s Grand Final meant spectacular entertainment like we’ve never seen before.

There were some interesting choices and some covers in the end, followed by an excellent finish … but it was dark outside. You know this is a plus.

We started with Electric Fields, Thelma Plum, Busby Marou and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra who – all of your favorites – combined for a remixed edition of Big things grow out of small things.

Big final

It got us thinking about superannuation more than anything, but it was a nice arrangement nonetheless.

(Then there was a commercial break because of course there was.)

The best and only actor in the MCG on Grand Final day was Mike Brady, who then joined the QSO to perform Cazaly up there.

We had to look out the office window twice to see if Brady actually came to us live – luckily it didn’t rain for the first time in Melbourne or Brisbane all day.

We don’t think it was him unless he has the ability to sing for a second before his mouth moves.

Brady, claiming “the crowd is on your side” in an empty stadium, was also an interesting dichotomy – although we have to admit it was still a nice touch.

Then came another pause because we needed to know about this show when the soldiers yelled at celebrities.

For all those people who wanted Powderfinger to perform, they didn’t get that, but they got Cub Sport to do a cover nowadays.

It was indeed our second slowed cover of the concert as the Grand Final entertainment is catching up with the trend of video game trailers with exciting songs, but all slow and dramatic. No, we will never survive … un … .. less … we’re going a little ……… crazy.

But we weren’t done with the slow pace there because then it was DMA’S with their cover of Cher’s Believe.

Look, this song is a certified banger, and DMA’S are a quality act – but not like that, and certainly not before a big sporting event!

They followed with Criminals. Another slow song.

At that point, it felt like the middle part of a concert where you hold up the lights on your phone or go out for a drink … except that the middle part was the whole concert.

At least we ended up with a proper stadium rock when Wolfmother’s Andrew Stockdale – no, Ben Brown wasn’t traded in for the band’s future pick in the third round – combined with the QSO for Joker and the thief.

You may have heard this song in every ad for the past decade. It remains a blast.

Was it all worth postponing the Grand Final five hours ago?
