Channel 7 star Brian Taylor has been criticized by football fans for his role in an awkward pre-game interview with Ash Barty and Stephanie Gilmore ahead of the 2020 AFL Grand Final.

Australian surf superstar Gilmore went to the gabba with Barty to cheer on the tigers at the beginning of this finals series, but has previously stated that her loyalty lies to Geelong.
Taylor couldn’t quite get into that particular fact when speaking to the couple in the rain-soaked gabba.
There were some awkward pauses during the exchange – and Footy fans accused Taylor of causing the interview to fall off the rails.

“Steph, why Geelong,” Taylor asked, even though Gilmore was wearing Richmond colors.
An embarrassed Gilmore replied, “Well, I think Ash made me the Tigers fan today.”
Taylor replied, “Didn’t you visit Geelong and that made you a Geelong devotee?”
Gilmore confessed that Barty is apparently very persuasive.
“Yes, but today I’ll go for the tigers,” she said.
Taylor tried to keep the interview lighthearted, but some soccer fans took to Twitter to claim Taylor’s asking questions was “humiliating.”
When he asked about Barty’s role as host of the Premier Cup, he also referred to Barty as the “football meathead”.
His questions to Gilmore were also criticized.
“How many footy games have you been to Steph?” Asked Taylor.
He also asked what Gilmore knew about the sport that came to mind when she first thought about Footy.
Taylor signed the interview with a joke: “I think these two could go for a wine”.
