Juan Francisco Estrada vs Carlos Cuadras 2: fight prediction, map, odds,...

When Carlos Cuadras tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this week, his rematch with Juan Francisco Estrada appeared to go up in smoke on Friday night. Instead, Cuadras was able to give a negative follow-up test and the fight was saved, as were the hopes for a rematch between Estrada and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez in the super flyweight division.

Cuadras (39-3-1, 27 KO’s) will fight against Estrada (40-3, 27 KO’s) for the WBC super flyweight championship at the Gymnasio TV Azteca main event in Mexico City (19:00 ET, DAZN). Chocolatito (49-2, 41 KO’s) will also be in action, bringing his WBA version of the £ 115 world title to the line against Israel Gonzalez (25-3, 11KO’s). The show’s goal for Matchroom Boxing seems to be to get to this unification battle between Estrada and Gonzalez. The two met back in 2012, and Gonzalez scored a huge decisive victory.

However, Cuadras is more than just a stepping stone to a bigger fight. In September 2017, Cuadras fought in a highly competitive battle against Estrada. Estrada recorded the fight on the judges’ scorecards, winning 114-113 on all three scorecards. A knockdown from Estrada on round 10 was the determining factor in that fight, but it showed that Cuadras can hang with Estrada. An angry Cuadras win could also result in a rematch, having lost in a bloody bout to Gonzalez himself in 2016.

Estrada defeated Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in April 2019, a victory that made him the best 115 pound fighter in the world and earned him the WBC world title. After a successful defense, he was linked with Cuadras, who has had a little trouble since first meeting Estrada, including taking a break in rehab after declining a drug test after losing to McWilliams Arroyo in 2018.

Chocolatito had been claiming a spot as arguably pound for pound of the sport’s best fighter when he came across Rungvisai, who gave Chocolatito the first two losses of his career. After a couple of rebound wins, he proved he had a lot to give in the ring by beating Khalid Yafai for a ninth round TKO win to claim the WBA title.

In Israel Gonzalez, Chocolatito meets a fighter who has lost his two previous shots at world championships. Gonzalez lost a shot in the IBF super flyweight title to Jerwin Ancajas in February 2018 and then lost to Yafai in a shot in the WBA title in November that year.

In the card’s opening fight, Julio Cesar Martinez (16-1, 12 KO’s) will bring his WBC flyweight title to the line against Moises Calleros (33-9-1, 17 KO’s). Calleros stands up for Maximino Flores after Flores tested positive for COVID-19 and ended a fight that looked like a thriller on paper. Martinez has established himself as a talent to be seen. He has impressed on every outing for the past few years before beating Cristofer Rosales to win the vacant WBC flyweight title.

Estrada vs. Cuadras 2 card, odds of winning

Juan Francisco Estrada (c) -575 Carlos Cuadras +425 WBC super flyweight title
Chocolatito Gonzalez (c) -2000 Israel Gonzalez +1000 WBA super flyweight title
Julio Cesar Martinez (c) -2200 Moises Calleros +1100 WBC flyweight title

forecast

Estrada shouldn’t and probably won’t look past Cuadras after their first fight was so close. Even so, the two men have gone in different directions since that first meeting. Cuadras had the stint in rehab and then put together some mediocre wins after returning to the ring. Meanwhile, Estrada has proven himself to be an elite fighter in the division and is probably just a win away from the rematch he has wanted for nearly a decade. Expect Cuadras to give it all he has and present the best version of himself that he has left, but it probably won’t be enough against a man who is just a better fighter now. Selection: road via UD
