Mikel Arteta

Arteta has had a successful start to his tenure as Arsenal manager.

Mikel Arteta is in season two of his first executive position after replacing Unai Emery in December 2019 and signing a deal until 2023 after leaving his role as Manchester City’s deputy manager.

Having emerged from FC Barcelona’s world-famous academy system, the Spaniard had a successful career as a player and often played as a central midfielder.

His first taste of senior football came during a year and a half loan period with Paris Saint-Germain, where he won the 2001 Intertoto Cup before joining Rangers.

In Scotland, he scored a penalty on the last day of the 2002/03 season when the Rangers completed triple the Scottish Premier League, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup honors.

Arteta’s second – and final – season north of the border was less successful when Martin O’Neill’s Celtic re-established their dominance over the Scottish game and Rangers finished second.

A year at Real Sociedad was supposed to coincide with a reunion with childhood friend Xabi Alonso, but when he left for Liverpool, Arteta’s new side were struggling in the league.

This led to a move to David Moyes’ Everton in the Premier League, where Arteta would help the Toffees compete for European qualifiers on a regular basis over six seasons.

In 2011 he moved to the capital to join Arsène Wenger’s arsenal. He won two FA Cups and Community Shields with the Gunners before retiring from the game in 2016.

Immediately thereafter, he teamed up with Pep Guardiola to become his compatriot’s assistant manager in Manchester City and played a role in the club’s two-year dominance over English football.

Though Man City missed the title for Chelsea in 2016/17, Man City won several Premier League triumphs over the next two years, earning 100 and 98 points respectively.

The 2017/18 title win coincided with a league cup win, while the following season ended in a national triple. Guardiola’s men defeated Watford 6-0 in the FA Cup Final at Wembley.

The last tenure, Arteta’s first tenure on the executive board, ended with an Emirates FA Cup triumph over Chelsea, which saw cutlery at Wembley for the fourth time in seven years.

The Spaniard was the first to win the competition as Arsenal captain and manager. The Gunners beat Liverpool 5-4 on penalties in the 2020 Community Shield to secure Arteta his second consecutive Wembley trophy before switching from head coach to manager in September.
