Australia may see a new heavyweight title contender when Justis Huni won the Australian heavyweight title on her professional debut.

The 21-year-old battled Faiga Opelu, who entered the fight with a 13-1-1 record, and showed mastery as he lived up to the hype.

An amateur star, Huni, despite his professional turn, is still eligible to fight in next year’s Olympics as Olympic regulations allow up to 10 professional bouts.

But he made history on debut as the first fighter of any weight to win the Australian title on debut.

Expectations are already high for Huni, who is on the map of Jai Opetaia’s cruiserweight bout with Ben Kelleher in Brisbane. The youngster believes he has the talent to be Australia’s all-time all-time heavyweight.

Huni was dominant and rocked the defending champion with some massive uppercuts.

In the seventh lap, Huni left Opelu bloody and his team threw in the towel.

“What an achievement,” said Ted Cofie.

Ben Damon said, “History was made in Brisbane and Justis Huni had to work for it.”

After the fight, Huni took a moment to immerse himself in what he had just achieved.

“Buddy, it’s amazing,” he said of Fox Sports’ Brenton Speed.

“To be here and fight for the Australian title on my debut, I would not have made it without my team and sponsors. I want to thank ‘Django’ and his team for this opportunity.

“We trained for it, we trained very hard for it, so we’re ready for anything.”

Huni also dedicated the fight to his great-uncle, who passed away last month.

But it was an impressive performance given the anticipation and quality of the opponent for his professional debut.

“I have fought in amateur ranks internationally, so I’m used to fighting in front of large crowds. That was natural, ”he said.

In the main event, Jai Opetaia taught Ben Kelleher in her WBO and IBF Intercontinental Cruiserweight Title bout.

While Opetaia wasn’t having his biggest fight, Kelleher was only able to defend after round six until the referee called the fight when the towel was thrown in.

Before the fight night, Huni and Opetaia already had a possible fight on the track.

“If this fight takes place, it will be the biggest fight in Australia,” said Opetaia. “I count on myself and this guy can make history.

“But when I say that, I have to tick a lot of boxes in the cruiserweight division first, and in the heavyweight division I have to tick a lot of boxes.

“We still have a long journey ahead of us before this fight takes place, but it’s great that we can make history together.”

‘HORRIFIC’ INJURY ROCKS FIGHT NIGHT

Previously, Queensland boxer Benjamin Hussain had fought a broken jaw for up to five rounds before the doctor called off the fight.

In the second round, Hussain’s outside keeper flew out of his mouth after a huge left hook.

From that point on, Hussain could no longer close his mouth when blood flowed from a wound on his tongue.

But as the fight went on, it became clear that the injury was worse than first thought when Hussain’s Corner heard him argue about whether it was a broken jaw.

The doctor entered Hussain’s protest in the sixth round and called for a fight.

“Your jaw is broken, buddy. I mean, it’s badly broken, we have to stop, ”said the doctor.

Fox Sports boxing commentator Ben Damon described the injury as “terrible”.

“What we saw with his mouth didn’t look good. We thought it might be a tongue or a cut in the mouth. But it’s a broken jaw and with it Benjamin Hussain showed that he is tough beyond the world.

“He went through most of this fight with what appeared to be a very, very badly damaged mouth and jaw.”
