One rider desperately looking for a good day in the saddle is Vincenzo Nibali. If he has any hope of winning he needs good legs and has to leave this morning. Here he is speaking after level 17 (yesterday).

“On today’s stage [Wednesday]There was a lot of expectation and the start was full, “he explained.” There were a lot of attacks in the first part of the day – and then we climbed at a regular pace. I expected the race to explode any minute, but it didn’t happen. On the last climb the pace was too fast and there was little opportunity to attack.

“Given the changes on Saturday and today’s result [Almeida defending his lead]Tomorrow’s stage will become the “Queen’s Stage” and gain in importance, “said Nibali.

“The profile of the stage is clear, but it all depends on the speed at which it is confronted. Expectations are high, but making predictions is a gamble when you consider how far this Giro has gone so far. ”

We are about 20 minutes from the official start, but the drivers are already there after registering this morning. There is Almeida who looks pretty relaxed in pink, but a lot of drivers will try to put pressure on the young QuickStep driver today. It’s a big test for the Grand Tour debutant.

Today the Giro d’Italia reaches the most critical GC stage of the entire race. It is the Queen’s stage when we climb the legendary Stilfserjoch.

Climbing starts from the beginning in Pinzolo, the Campo Carlo Magno of the second category via Madonna di Campiglio, the first test of the day. If the riders fall away from it, they will arrive in Val di Sole, but will soon climb away from there via a recently opened pass that appears for the first time on the route. The Passo Castrin / Hohmandjoch stretches for 8.8 kilometers and is not long, but consistently steep. At its 1,704-meter-high summit, the average is over 9 percent.

The descent leads over the race into Val d’Ultimo, past Merano and west. Follow the Adige upstream to the bottom of the Val Venosta and turn off here to approach Passo Stelvio from the Prato side. From this small town, the mythical climb is nearly 25 km long and climbs an average of 7.5 percent through 48 hairpins, many of which are taller majestically constructed with the corners on high walls of cut stone. The last third of the ascent is over 2,000 meters, whereby the height exacerbates the difficulty, which already results from the length and the gradient of the Stilfserjoch.

The riders descend most of the way towards Bormio and turn off at Premadio to undertake the climb to Laghi di Cancano. With an average of 6.8 percent over 8.7 kilometers, it is not comparable to the Stilfserjoch, but when the weather is nice it is characterized by both the spectacular view and the beauty of the road, especially with these serpentines in the direction of Die Spitze, from from which the riders emerge in two kilometers flat to the finish next to the Cancano dam and the lake.
