Greater Western Sydney may risk losing striker Jeremy Cameron for nothing if a trade deal with Geelong cannot be reached.
The Giants have confirmed that they will likely go along with the Cats’ offer to Cameron, forcing the two parties to enter into a trade agreement for the deal.
If the Giants do not match the offer, the club receives a selection for the remuneration of the first round (selection 10). But given Cameron’s status in the game, there’s no doubt GWS deserves more after the big one scored 427 goals in 171 games.

While the cats are currently holding picks 11, 13, 18, and 25, Stephen Wells and his team are determined to play hardball and not sell the farm in order to pair Coleman medalist Tom Hawkins with the GWS gun.
In 2015, however, the Cats signed a trade deal with the Crows in 2015 to bring free agent Patrick Dangerfield to the club. Wells moved Pick 9, 28 and Dean Gore to South Australia.
Keep talking IT IS On Tuesday morning, GWS Footy boss Jason McCartney confirmed that Cameron may need to go into the national or pre-season draft for the Cats to secure him, which may result in another club like Collingwood snapping up the big ones.
Last year, Gold Coast held up trade talks between Carlton and Jack Martin, which resulted in the midfielder getting into the preseason draft.
In order for the cats to close a deal, they may need to group several selections together to make a tastier selection for the giants.
Gold Coast (Pick 5) and Carlton (Pick 7) are two such clubs that have been identified as potentially looking to improve on their high selections. The Cats can combine a number of top 20 picks to get into the top 10.
If the young gun Jordan Clark returns to Western Australia, Geelong could ask for Fremantle’s Pick 10 to be included in the deal.
“It is disappointing that he (Cameron) is a founding player and an outstanding young person,” said Dave Matthews, CEO of Giants Sports day on Monday evening.
“If Geelong was under four, he probably wouldn’t go there, would he?
“It is very likely that we will comply with the offer. So the ball is in Geelong’s place to see if they can please us with a trade.
“(Adam) Treloar and (Dylan) Shiel were worth two picks in the first round and are both very good players, but key strikers are hard to find.”
GWS will lose freelance agents Zac Williams (Carlton) and Aidan Corr (North Melbourne), while Jackson Hately (Adelaide) and Zac Langdon (West Coast) will also want to leave.
The Giants are hopeful midfielders Jye Caldwell and Xavier O’Halloran who will strike new deals and avoid the interest of rivals.

While the risk of playing hardball may result in Cameron being lost for nothing, the Giants are calling for more top talent in drafting, and multiple selections within the top 15 would help the club prepare for a start to the finals.
After grabbing the academy weapon Tom Green in 2019, the Giants will look to add more explosive power to the list after some of the youngest conscripts took a step forward in 2020.
The Giants have a strong history in the draft and smart moves with the Cameron picks would surely make up for a disastrous season.
