Aidan O’Brien Camp says Cox Plate contender Armory arrived in Melbourne with stronger form than 2014 stable winner, Adelaide.

Adelaide won the Cox Plate as a three-year-old in the northern hemisphere after winning three of its seven starts before defeating Fawkner at the Moonee Valley showpiece six years ago.

Armory has won four of its eleven starts. Adelaide was a Group 1 winner in the US before landing in Australia, but Armory’s best result was a third behind European stars Magical and Ghaiyyath at the Irish Champion Stakes last month.

This form arose when the fourth horse Sottsass defeated a field on October 4th at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France, which included the British champion Enable, the star stayer Stradivarius and the Japanese top mare Deirdre.

“I would say this horse is definitely in better shape in the book (than Adelaide),” said O’Brien’s traveling foreman TJ Comerford.

“When you have Magical and Ghaiyyath in front of you and the Arc winner behind you, and he was only three years old and dealt with older horses at the time, he definitely seems better.”

The Armory galloped Tuesday morning in company with their Cox Plate runner Magic Wand in Werribee.

Comerford said the work showed Armory was ready to perform at Saturday’s $ 5 million event that saw Galileo’s son pull six.

He added that the draw gave jockey Ben Melham an opportunity to advance Armory to the first corner on the run, while the narrow valley track wouldn’t worry the stallion.

“Armory is a horse that always gives and does everything right,” said Comerford. “We couldn’t have had him better.

“I would say Armory is the right type of horse. He’s not a big massive horse but he’s big enough and he’s very straightforward and he has a good draw too.

“We can sit close to the pace. If no one wants to move forward, we will move forward, but if not, there is no harm. ”

The armory has solidified from $ 6 to $ 5.50 in TAB’s Cox Plate market, while Russian Camelot remains the favorite after pulling the outside gate from $ 4 to $ 4.60.
