Nurmagomedov (28-0) returns after a 13-month layoff after beating Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 in September and winning it in the third round to successfully defend the title for the second time. The native Dagestan had an appointment with Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 on April 18. In mid-March, Nurmagomedov left his training camp at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California after reports from the UFC that UFC 249 would likely take place in the United Arab Emirates because COVID-19 is forcing the event to be postponed, not theirs original location in Brooklyn.
After entering the UAE, Nurmagomedov was asked to leave the country as the country was closing its borders and no one could fly in or out. The 31-year-old flew back to Russia to be with his family and kept training. Ultimately, however, Nurmagomedov decided that health and safety were more important than finding a way to get in touch with Ferguson.
Gaethje immediately stepped to the plate and took on Ferguson for the intermediate belt when UFC 249 was postponed to May 9th. The former World Series of Fighting (now Professional Fight League) lightweight defending champion beat Ferguson from start to finish, winning fifth-round TKO to claim his first UFC belt, snapping the 12-fight winning streak in the process former £ 155 interim champions.
