Casey Stoner starts the fight against chronic fatigue syndrome

Australian MotoGP legend Casey Stoner has grappled with his health problems while continuing to struggle with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME / CFS).

The two-time MotoGP world champion announced last year that he was diagnosed with a debilitating disease that affects sleep, leads to severe fatigue and memory problems.

Stoner, who retired from MotoGP in 2012, spoke to Nine’s Today, detailed how the disease had affected his way of life.

The 35-year-old announced that he first found out about his battle with the disease after noticing “extreme symptoms” making him unable to move around the house.

“I developed symptoms of ME / CFS in 2018,” said Stoner.

“I was going downhill very quickly and got some extreme symptoms and struggled to get out of bed and get to the couch.

“Because people can’t see it, it’s not a physical element that people can see, so people don’t take it that seriously.

“They all just go, ‘you’re a little tired, get up’.

“We currently have no cure. We don’t have enough information about things that can help.

“The amount of positive feedback I’ve had since coming out and telling the public that I have ME / CFS – it’s nice to know that people out there are ready to recognize and understand the situation is not good for people.

“I hope other people in the world can get support, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.”
