There were two major VAR controversies, one towards the beginning of the game and one towards the end.
In the first half, Toffees keeper Jordan Pickford defeated Virgil Van Dijk in a seemingly dangerous tackle as he hit the ball in his own box.

The challenge could have resulted in a red card for the England international, although this did not happen as the previous chance was considered offside.
The second controversy surrounding VAR concerned Jordan Henderson’s late goal. It was scraped off after Sadio Mane was in an offside position leading up to the goal.
At first glance, however, it looked like Mane was a perfect fit for the Everton defenders.
According to a Liverpool journalist
club asked the prem about three things. The first is why Pickford wasn’t sent off for his dangerously high challenge against Van Dijk.#LFC have tonight asked the Premier League for an explanation over the use of VAR in the Goodison derby.

They want clarification over why Pickford wasn't sent off, what part of Mane's body was deemed offside and the selection of the freeze frame for that decision.
The second is what part of Mane’s body was considered offside. The third is VAR’s selection of the still image for the prohibited target.
After the game, BT Sports expert Jermaine Jenas questioned the still image the officials had used when calculating the offside position. Jenas believed the still image was taken a second or two late, which made Mane look offside when he actually wasn’t.
Prem officials have yet to answer questions from last season’s champions.
Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp was understandably angry at the full time. Talk after the game he said: “Pickford kicks him completely. I have to see it. I saw the illegal goal at the end and in the picture I saw that it was not offside. Can anyone explain to me?
“I’m a big supporter of VAR, but you expect them to make the right decisions. I did ten interviews and everyone told me it wasn’t offside. That doesn’t lift my spirits. ”
