Anthony Cummings cautious but confident with Libertini

Coach Anthony Cummings admits that his usual unlimited trust in the star sprinter Libertini will be tempered by the quality of the opponents at the 15 million dollar TAB Everest (1200 m) on Saturday in Royal Randwick.

“The reality is that in a normal race, Libertini would just go out there and win – but this is not a normal race,” said Cummings.

“The depth of this field is extraordinary and you have to pay due respect to the opposition.

“Everyone is there with a view of their horse, which is probably not unlike mine.

“Hopefully we have a clean race and the best horse wins. I expect it to be me, but it could be someone else, and there’s really no shame in that. “

The elite Everest field of 12 horses includes seven individual Group 1 winners of 17 major races that have collectively earned more than $ 27 million.

Libertini didn’t win in the elite, but there is no doubt about her ability, as demonstrated by winning the Group 2 premiere stakes two weeks ago.

She defeated Everest rivals Classique Legend and Nature Strip by two lengths and recorded a glowing 1 minute and 7.6 seconds for the Randwick 1200 m.

On the latest TAB Fixed Odds betting, Nature Strip is Classique Legend’s favorite at $ 5 at $ 4.60 while Libertini is down to $ 9.50.

The Cummings-trained mare had $ 6 worth of Everest bets earlier in the week, but has been the market drifter since Tuesday’s draw when she was assigned the outside gate.

Cummings said the barrier wasn’t ideal but still believes Libertini, ridden by Regan Bayliss, is good enough to break the draw.

“I don’t think you can make a plan from there,” he said.

“We must seize the opportunities when they come, just as you are in the hands of 11 others.

“There are some designated backmarkers and some executives so there will be a gap somewhere. ”

Cummings said if Bayliss can find cover for Libertini early on, the mare will be the one to beat.

“I think she’s better with a back to follow and that’s what I hope for early in the race,” said Cummings.

“Nature Strip has moved in and we all know that if he jumps away he’ll be up there. Haut Brion She has a natural goal speed and will be in the line of fire for at least the first Furlong. Eduardo has a lot of speed.

“Bivouac has the same problem as me, so you have to make a decision early on.

“If she takes cover, I would really love it.

“Then we can sit and wait like we did last time in the Premiere Stakes. ”

Libertini was explosive that day, sprinting past Classique Legend.

It was the four-year-old mare’s first start since March and Cummings claims Libertini will improve Everest.

“She’s perfect,” said Cummings.

“All of the improvements we’ve been looking for have come to help her start the race in great shape. ”

PROUD: WE ARE NOT WAITING FOR NATURAL STRIPS

Eduardo’s trainer Joe Pride has boldly stated that his sprinter “won’t wait for the Nature Strip” in the early speed battle for the $ 15 million TAB Everest (1200 m) on Saturday at Royal Randwick.

The Horse of the Year Nature Streak is generally expected to seek victory across the board, but it doesn’t always start well at the barriers.

Proudly said Eduardo was a brilliant starter and he would instruct jockey Rachel King to be positive early on to “negate barrier nine”

“Eduardo is a fast barrier horse, and I told Rachel that there was no point in being half-hearted at the start of the race,” said Pride.

“The Nature Strip doesn’t always start well, it’s not the fastest for the first 100 meters either, so we could possibly cross it early.

“We don’t want to stare at him, but we don’t want to just assume that he will lead.

“If Nature Strip misses (the start), we won’t wait for him.

“But if Nature Strip jumps and leads well, Rachel will likely sit right next to him and have Eduardo where he’s comfortable. We have to drive our own race. ”

King, the first female jockey to ride Everest, had the chance to put Eduardo through its paces in a Warwick Farm barrier trial eight days ago when she thought the sprinter’s speed was invaluable.

Eduardo raced around the track to win the nearly seven length attempt. He ran 46.24 seconds for the 801 m, including a final 600 m section of a very quick 32.63 seconds, although King never really put the gelding under pressure.

“You expect to be able to test good horses well, but his times have been excellent,” said Pride.

“He’s a fast horse, he runs fast. He’s not a wild horse, but he just runs fast with pricked ears. ”

Ranked the world’s top sprinter, Nature Strip is the favorite at $ 4.60 with TAB Fixed Odds to win Everest while Eduardo is at $ 21.

Eduardo, a seven-year-old gelding who had just made his 16th start in Everest, did not collapse until he was four.

But the late start to Eduardo’s racing career is not rated negatively by Pride, who only got the sprinter for training earlier this year.

“I’ve had quite a bit of success with older horses and most of them didn’t race at two and made very few races at three,” said Pride.

“When Eduardo got to my stable, I went back in shape – he won Group 2 very early in his career, then he got lost a bit, but they don’t lose their skills and we’ve got him back on track now.

“I think we haven’t seen the best of him yet, and that may seem strange when you talk about a seven year old, but I am convinced his best race is ahead of him.

“He’s there to do a big race in Everest. ”
