GAA players and fans celebrated after winning a County Cup for the first time – and now several have Covid.

Exclusive images from the Irish Mirror show them drinking Moycullen in a packed parish pub after Galway Club’s historic soccer victory.

A club source said, “Our boys drank on Sunday and Monday. They went to the pubs and had a drink, but we had no control over it.

“The county finals got everyone out, maybe the alcohol numbed the senses. It was a harsh reality for people. ”

The club confirmed this week that members of its victorious senior national team tested positive for the virus – just over a week after the celebrations.

The jam-packed event where people are heard singing was not approved by the GAA because the club canceled its own celebrations.

No masks were seen during the filmed party.

Fans and some players partied in a local pub that appeared to be ignoring social distancing guidelines and on the street after the club beat rivals Mountbellew-Moylough last Sunday.

The county was subject to Level 2 restrictions at the time, which allowed pubs to serve alcohol with protective measures.

This week, Moycullen had to pull all players out of the county senior and U20 bodies due to the rising number of positive cases of Covid in the region.

Paul Clancy, chairman of Moycullen, said in a statement on Tuesday, “When we heard about these cases at the club, we acted immediately and canceled all activities to allow time for any necessary follow-up action.

“The club had previously canceled the club celebration after our county final victory.”

Dr. Monaghan GP Ilona Duffy said gathering after the games was a big problem.

She told RTE News, “The GAA are doing everything according to the guidelines. I think we have to go one step further.

“I think the government has to cancel games.”
