The awards have started flowing after footballer Jake Ryan died in a tragic accident earlier this week while on vacation in Europe.

The former Gold Coast Suns Academy coach survived the 2002 Bali bombings before nearly 18 years passed by the day of the traumatic event.

Ryan was traveling in Italy when he was tragically hit by a train. The driver tried to resuscitate the 39-year-old, but died on the scene.

Ryan, a talented soccer player, played on the Gold Coast and represented Southport – but was also represented in the VFL and WAFL.

“We are deeply saddened to hear that Jake Ryan has passed away,” Southport Sharks wrote on .

“We’d like to express our condolences to Jake’s family and friends.”

Ryan coached the Gold Coast Suns Academy between 2012 and 2016.

On October 12th, Ryan pondered the tragedy in Bali on Facebook and said he was “forever grateful” and was one of the lucky people who survived the incident.

“Eighteen years ago … a life … and yet like yesterday,” he said.

“You think back and I just think how lucky we were to get home. Some weren’t.

“Being on the journey I’m on right now is a perfect reminder of how lucky I am.”

Surfers Paradise held a meeting on Wednesday afternoon to remember “a great club man and friend.”

“RIP to my friend Jake Ryan. Survivor of the Bali bombing, footballer, man who enjoyed his time to the full. His story was incredible. Lots of love for this guy and lots of great nights at the events we did together. Life is too short, ”wrote Chris Helder on Facebook.

“Sad day today when we lost one of the best! RIP big man Jake Ryan. I’ve never met a guy to lead a life harder or better than him, ”added Josh Willatt.
