Lucas Torreira sealed a move to Atletico Madrid on the day of the transfer deadline. The Uruguayan was an instant hit in the Emirates after moving from Sampdoria in 2018, but he dropped the pecking order under Mikel Arteta.

With Thomas Partey’s move to the Emirates, Torreira’s chances of a regular playing time had decreased even further. That forced him to look elsewhere for an opportunity, and Diego Simeone’s side was more than happy to take it.

Lucas’ father Ricardo Torreira spoke to Libertad Digital about his son’s future. He claimed the midfielder is open to staying at Arsenal next summer, but only if Arteta and the club want him.

Torreira remains open for Arsenal after Atleti was loaned out

He said, “Lucas has a big heart and puts a lot of effort into everything he does. That’s why he’s not one of those players who likes to wait minutes on the bench. He has to show what he can give on the field. Lucas is honest and wants to keep his soul on the field but that is defined by the coaches and it didn’t count for the current Arsenal manager.

“Arsenal have decided he won’t get any minutes but we promise, God willing, if everything goes well and if there is a coach at Arsenal who loves him when his contract with Atlético ends, we will leave his soul there again if you want him. ”

Torreira still has three years left on his Arsenal deal. The 24-year-old is a solid player and with regular playing time can show Arteta that he is good enough to play regularly in the Emirates.

The former Sampdoria man clearly wouldn’t mind staying at Arsenal for the next season if he is guaranteed opportunities. Arteta was reluctant to use Torreira when he was fit at Arsenal and with Partey’s arrival the need for Uruguayans continues to diminish.

However, if he has an incredible season with Atleti, Arteta could change his mind and hold onto him. Matteo Guendouzi’s career at Arsenal appears to be at a point of no return while Dani Ceballos will have to return to Real Madrid at the end of his loan period.

A space in the middle of the park could open next summer. If Torreira has a good year under Simeone in Madrid, he could be a regular at Arsenal next season.
