A special project is underway to literally place ‘The G’ in The Gabba ahead of this year’s AFL Grand Final.

A goal pitch from the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is extracted and shipped nearly 1,800 kilometers to Brisbane, where it will be deposited in the AFL decider’s temporary home.

Under the direction of long-term partner Rebel, a team of experienced grass curators, transport experts and horticulturists from both countries is helping with the delicate operation.

“While we were moving plant material from one climate to another, we had to make sure that the turf extraction was done carefully so as not to damage or stress the roots so they could survive their long journey to The Gabba,” said MCG Executive Turf Manager Michael Salvatore said.

Once removed from the MCG at the end of town, it will be used for high priority overnight transportation prior to arriving in Brisbane.

“The temperature-controlled transportation will ensure our sacred lawn is ready for the Brisbane climate ahead of the AFL Grand Final,” said Salvatore.

From there, the grass curators in Brisbane will restore the lawn ahead of the AFL Grand Final on Saturday October 24th.

This is the first year since 1991 that the MCG has stopped hosting the AFL Grand Final after the coronavirus pandemic forced the decision maker to move to Queensland.

The majority of AFL teams have been stationed in the Sunshine State since July after Victoria’s second wave forced the league to move north to keep the season alive.
