SOUTHERN PLAN FOR THE HUNTING OF TEEN STAR

Teen sensation Joseph Suaali is hot property and perhaps the biggest contract talk in Australian sport right now.

The South Sydney prodigy is the subject of an intense tug-of-war between rugby league and rugby union, and in particular a number of clubs on both sides of the sporting divide.

The latest rumors have linked him to the Roosters and Wests Tigers.

Channel 9 journalist Danny Weidler says the Rabbitohs almost resigned themselves to losing the young talent … but they won’t let their biggest rival get them.

“The southern states say they really don’t believe he will be in their club,” Weidler told Big Sports Breakfast radio.

“You are ready to release him the right way. You’d be most comfortable if he were in rugby union so he’s not in a rival club.

“They firmly believe that there is no way the Roosters will get it … that will be part of any type of release.”

STICKING POINT IN THE MATT LODGE CONTRACT

It has been reported that Matt Lodge is one of the many players new Brisbane coach Kevin Walters is dying to dump.

The Courier Mail wrote last week that Walters had up to 10 players on the chopping block in a brutal start to his reign with the Broncos.

Lodge only signed a new three-year extension last year, but the Courier Mail now reports that there was a hidden clause in the deal.

Two hidden clauses actually – Lodge apparently has another two years in his favor for this contract.

It means the Broncos may have trouble getting him out of their books since he’s guaranteed so much money at Red Hill.

All Lodge has to do is choose to activate those additional two years and it’s long been set up.

DOGS TO SIGN FIREBAND FORWARD

Promising Penrith forward Jack Hetherington is on his way to Canterbury under new coach Trent Barrett.

The Bulldogs are about to confirm the signing after the Panthers agreed to release the 24-year-old from the final year of his contract.

Hetherington has only played 23 games since making his NRL debut in 2018, but has also been banned five times.

There’s a belief that if Barrett can get young Hartnuss to control his temperament on the field, he’ll have a quality striker himself who is able to leave it to the real hardmen in competition.

This was proven when Hetherington got under the skin of Roosters enforcer Jared Waerea-Hargreaves a few weeks ago.

Hetherington was on loan to the Warriors when he went head to toe with the Kiwi International and prevailed against him.

Barrett wants some of that fire to bring his bulldogs to life, and Hetherington may be the fireworks they need if he can stay in the park next year.

PANTHERS EXTEND FINALS STAR

According to The Daily Telegraph, Penrith has given Tyrone May a new one-year contract.

May was withdrawn last year and charged with involvement in a sex tape scandal, but that has changed this year to re-join the side close to the preliminary final against South Sydney.

He’s snuck into the centers or from the bank in a supporting role, that’s the depth of the talent in the club.

TITANS SNAP WARRIORS BACK

Gold Coast has pounced on Warriors outside of Patrick Herbert.

The Courier Mail reports that Herbert has signed a one-year contract and will join the Titans in the preseason.

With Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and David Fifita, Gold Coast is putting together one of the most exciting teams in the competition for the next season.

Herbert played 13 games for the Warriors that year and proved to be a handy pick-up in the middle or on a wing.
