Paul Scholes said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should forget about signing England prodigy Jadon Sancho and instead look for an absolute striker like Harry Kane or Erling Braut Haaland.

Solskjaer had reportedly picked 20-year-old winger Sancho as his # 1 target for the summer transfer window, but Manchester United refused to pay the £ 108m prize despite following the talented player for many months.

United midfield legend Scholes has argued that there is no way the club should put all their eggs in their basket, as he believes the Red Devils need one center-forward more than another to play far out.

They should have focused on protecting England captain Kane from Tottenham Hotspur or turned their attention to Borussia Dortmund’s young team-mate Haaland, said Scholes, who has only played for United Red so far.

Scholes also expressed frustration with the club officials, who apparently did nothing more than provide superficial support to managers in the transfer market.

When asked about Solskjaer from the Malaysian outlet Stadium Astro, he said, “I don’t think he’s the first to be unsupported.

“A lot of money has been spent, but has it been spent on the first decisions these managers want? I’m not sure.

“In my opinion [Louis] van Gaal and [Jose] Mourinho in particular groaned about it and it’s understandable when they don’t get the players they want. ”

Scholes said United were naive to believe their winning streak towards the end of last season was a sign that they could relax in the summer window.

He added: “It’s a lot easier to win games towards the end of the season. It’s a lot easier to go for a run when the pressure doesn’t really stop.

“Okay, you can talk about the pressure to get in the top four but that’s not the pressure United want, United want to win leagues.

“They felt that at the end of last season he would have had more support in the transfer market to get back to the next level, but he wasn’t given that.

“It’s pretty clear that the players he wanted didn’t come.”
