- Yasmine El Tohamy - Egyptian Premier League leaders Al Ahly have succeeded to snatch a last-gasp win following their 1-0 victory over El-Gouna in the 22nd round of the league.

Al Ahly were coming from a disappointing 3-1 defeat to arch rivals Zamalek in Cairo derby on Saturday and had to overcome their frustration in the following contest.

The game started as expected, with the Red Devils pushing hard to score an early opener and they almost did after six minutes off a corner kick that left the ball loose in the box but none of Al Ahly players managed to pounce.

In the eighth minute Afsha fed Badji with a pass inside the box, the latter collected the ball but his first touch was heavy for him to fail to get the shot properly on target.

Afsha came close to open the scoring with a left-footed drive that hit the post in the 35th minute for the first half to end goalless.

In the second half Al Ahly continued to hold ball possession while being wasteful in front of goal with two chances from Afsha.

In the 62nd minute Aliou Dieng was sent off after receiving a second yellow for a harsh challenge on El-Gouna winger Islam Roshdi after VAR review.

El-Gouna almost surprised Al Ahly after Islam Mohareb couldn’t capitalise on a poor set-piece defending from the Red Devils defenders but El-Shennawy blocked his short range attempt.

Marwan Mohsen was subbed on in Badji’s place in the 86th minute, and he was the one to break the deadlock and gift the win for Al Ahly after controlling El-Shennawy’s long pass in a great manner before firing in the bottom far corner.

With their victory, Al Ahly raised their points tally to 59 points on the top of the Egyptian Premier League table, while El-Gouna remained in the 15th place with 21 points.
